Congress Passes Bill to Release Jeffrey Epstein Records

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday gave swift approval to a measure that will force the release of investigative files associated with the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team changed course after an extended period of trying to forestall the cross-party initiative involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

Senators proceeded by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but avoids a formal roll call vote, expediting the process. Hours earlier, the House overwhelmingly approved the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have endured sufficient delay. Those affected have waited long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to pass it unanimously. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Future Action

The measure next heads to Donald Trump for his endorsement. Trump stated on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for months dismissed the outcry over the authorities' approach of the investigation as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the legislation over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Response

Democrats, along with victims and their supporters who were watching from a House gallery, applauded after the bill was approved. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who said he feared the measure would reveal specific data of witnesses, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
