Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
